TMJ in Windsor
The condition we call TMJ disorder, or “TMJ” for short, is actually several conditions that cause symptoms in the temporomandibular joint. You have two of these joints, one at either end of your lower jaw. The symptoms of TMJ, such as headaches, facial pain, trouble chewing or opening your mouth, and a “popping” sensation when you open your mouth, are caused by factors that impact these joints.
Because TMJ can have a variety of causes, diagnosis is part detective work and part process of elimination. We’ll look at various factors such as your eating habits, your general health and stress level, the structure of your jaws, and whether you grind your teeth at night.
Treatment depends on the cause. Often the joints are inflamed so treatments may focus on reducing this inflammation. We may also recommend measures to improve your overall health and reduce stress and correct any bite or grinding issues with orthopedic appliances. Other treatments include physiotherapy, massage therapy, and stretching.
